CCPS 5K Race Recap

The Collier County Public Schools 5K is a great local event for the whole family. They have 3 different race options – competitive 5K, fun 5K and 1 mile. This means there is a distance for everyone in the family! Proceeds go 100% to benefit all collier county pubic schools. The race starts at 8am and takes place at the administrative building/Osceola Elementary/Barron Collier High School. There is plenty of parking, race support and decorations. The event is organized by Gulf Coast Runners and was done perfectly, as always. Race Day Packet Pickup was quick and easy and I knew exactly where I needed to go.

The competitive 5K lined up first and the race started a little after 8am. With family races you expect them to run a little behind. The national anthem was sung and balloons popped to signify the start. The first mile was looped down and back passed Osceola Elementary. They had 2 water stops along the course and one of them you could catch twice – when you looped back. The second mile was passed the bus depot behind Barron Collier and had a little loop back. The third mile was on the north side of Barron and the race finished around the track/football field. I thought it was really nice because the scoreboard had the time, so coming in you could see how you were doing. This gave me that little boost of motivation seeing the time and finish line. Then it became a race to the finish!

After crossing the finish line they had medals and water. There were sponsors set up along the track to visit and get some goodies from. Then you could hang out on the field and watch the other runners come in. Awards ran about 30min late since they decided to wait until almost everyone had finished instead of at 9am like initially stated. I think this was nice since they had group awards to give out and you want everyone to be able to enjoy that.

Overall the weather was perfect and the course was flat and fast except for the 3 loop backs and lots of people (1,000+). The race support and organization was stellar and I look forward to running again next year!

Cheers to many more miles!
