Reindeer Run 5K 2016
The Reindeer Run is put on by Collier County Girls On The Run as the final run of their winter season. It is a great way to celebrate the end of the season as well as the holidays. The race started at 8am with group/school meet ups starting at 7am. Each school was given a designated meeting area marked by a sign and had different activities the girls could participate in. Many of the girls made reindeer ears to wear for the race and even got to paint their nails! Santa and his reindeer were there to take pictures with. They had a little kids dash run before the 5K. I got there with plenty of time to find my group and meet my running buddy.
Before I knew it we were on the track and ready to run! Sheila and I planned to run slow and steady so that she could run most of the race. I let her set the pace and she did a great job! We walked through the water stops so that we could drink and take a mini break. Only down side was that there was really only 1 water stop for the girls. Luckily you could hit it on the way back as well. Everyone was doing their best and having a blast! That is what running is all about. Girls On The Run is a great organization to help empower young women that they can do anything they put their mind to. Most of the girls had never run before or considered themselves a “runner”. Now they can proudly say that they are a runner and accomplished one of their goals.
Anyone who has ever started running knows that a 5K is normally your first race goal. I was so proud of Sheila for not only finishing her first 5K race, but she was the second girl from her school to cross the finish line! Running is something that is so special to me, so it was an honor getting to share that passion with her. Hopefully it lit a spark in her mind to love running as well! Overall it was a great family fun race and I can’t wait to participate with GOTR for future seasons.
Cheers to many more miles!
