Let me start by saying I spent Saturday up in Tampa at a Halloween/Birthday party for my nephew’s 4th birthday. Not the best idea when you have a race the next morning but I didn’t have a choice and I had a blast so that is that. I got up at 5:45am so I could get out the door by 6:15 and to the park by 6:30am. I arrived, check in, used the potty and headed to the start line. The weather was perfect! Nice and cool, but not cold and even when the sun came out it was overcast making for perfect running weather.
The national anthem rock style started right on time at 7am! Before I knew it we were off! This particular course consisted of 3 loops around North Collier Regional Park. I have to say after that race I am officially not a fan of loop courses. Nothing is worse then being on your second loop and the speedy runners are on their third. Way to make a person feel slow. 🙁 Anyway they had 2 water stations and one of them you could hit from two directions. Personally that was not enough water stops for me, they did say every 2 miles (not true) and I should have carried water with me. Fail on my part. Rock music was blasting in different areas to complete the rocktoberfest theme. Around mile 7 I could feel a blister starting to form on the arch of my right foot. I think it may be time for a new pair of running shoes! Luckily there was a lady doing intervals just ahead of me so I followed her pace to take my mind off my foot.
As far as staff/volunteer support there were not many. A few volunteers at the water stations and that was about it. I ran an 11/12min mile pace and it was like they were shutting down things while I was finishing the last 2 miles. I finished right around the 2 hour mark and although I am a slower runner never before I have felt so under-appreciated after a race. (From the event people that is, not my fabulous husband who brought me a dozen rose to the finish line!) It was also disheartening to see as I was getting ready to leave they were packing up the course with runners still on it!!!!! No where in the sign up process did they have a course time limit. Granted the runners would be finishing after 2.5 hours but what if it was that persons first race? I find that completely unacceptable and because of that I will never participate in an Elite Events race again!
Overall the distance is great since you don’t find to many 10 mile races. The course was 3 loops, so not my cup of tea. I ended up getting very bored and feeling discouraged. The race staff and support were lacking as well as water stations. If you are looking to do this race next year you must be fast or carry water with you. Personally I will not be there, I would rather save my money and run 10 miles along the beach with friends. The medal at the end was pretty cool and the race shirt definitely followed the rocktoberfest theme. All opinions are my own and other races may have loved it, just not myself.
Cheers to many more miles!
